Most commercial and multi-family properties in Alabama are required to have a fire lane, which consists of two marked stripes that identify a specific area as well as a path that is marked with a 6″ red line and “No Parking Fire Lane” stencils periodically on both sides of the drive.
Maintaining your fire lane color is needed for curb appeal as well as for meeting your local fire code, which will keep you from getting fined by your local government for improper parking lot markings. Whether it’s a single stripe or a full lot, no matter how big or how small the job – Parking Lot Striping Birmingham is the one to call to get the job done right the first time, every time. Contact us now for a free estimate! Fire lanes ensure that the fire department will have easy driving access to all parts of the building. They are necessary for every commercial and multi-family residential property. New buildings or additions need to have new fire lanes striped and existing buildings are required to maintain their fire lanes with fresh paint so that they are visible. Fire Lane Guidelines are Found in the Municipal Code Guidelines that determine the fire lane widths, distances, and layouts are usually governed and enforced by the municipality where the property is located. These municipal codes are available to the public and must be adhered to. Fire Marshal Inspections Create Deadlines Existing fire lanes are always monitored by the fire marshal and inspected regularly. If a violation is found, you are given a short amount of time to have the violation fixed or you will receive a fine. Usually, the violation is because of old or chipped paint that makes the fire lane hard to see. The property owner is given a short amount of time to have the fire lane re-striped. |

ADA Design Guidelines for Parking Lot Striping Spaces Required for Handicapped Parking Regardless of how many handicapped spaces are required, the first handicapped space must meet the requirements for van accessibility and must be labeled as such. The number of ADA-compliant spaces required depends on the total number of parking spaces in your lot. Sizes and Placement of Accessible Spaces Accessible parking spaces must be a minimum of 8 feet in width. All ADA-compliant spaces must include an access aisle with a minimum width of 8 feet for van-accessible spaces or 5 feet for automobile-accessible spaces. The access aisle must run the entire length of the space and cannot intrude into it. Adjacent parking spaces may share an access aisle. Handicapped spaces must provide access to your building with the most direct and shortest route. Curbs in this path must have a ramp, but the ramp cannot intrude into the access aisle or parking space. Crosswalks must be marked if the route crosses a path of vehicular traffic. Handicapped Parking Space Stenciling and Marking The international symbol denoting handicapped access is used in all states except New York. This is the familiar image of a person seated in a wheelchair; the background is dark blue while the wheelchair and its occupant are white. This image may be painted onto the pavement, but a permanently affixed sign must also be installed at the front of the space. The sign must also state “van accessible” for such spaces. The bottom of the signs must be placed so that the entire sign is visible over the hood of the vehicle. Access aisles must be marked to prevent others from parking over them. The aisles should be marked on both sides of the accessible space. The color of these aisle markings may be specified by state or local law, but the ADA does not require any given color. |
Concrete Wheel StopsConcrete wheel stops are the most common and most economical used wheel stops. They are attached to the parking lot either by rebar or epoxy. They can also be painted for aesthetics or functional purposes. These wheel stops can be installed on both concrete or asphalt and in parking lots or parking garages. The main disadvantage of having concrete wheel stops is their durability. Over time, they can crack down the middle from car tires constantly bumping them. Concrete wheel stops are sometimes painted as part of a parking lot striping project. If concrete wheel stops are painted, they will need to be re-painted frequently to look fresh.

Rubber Wheel StopsIf concrete is too heavy and seems like a lot of work to you, there are rubber wheel stops to consider as an option. Most rubber wheel stops are made of recycled rubber, so if the environmental impact of wheel stops is a concern to you, rubber is the way to go. They’re also lightweight, don’t chip or degrade the way concrete does, and are much easier to install than concrete wheel stops.
To install rubber wheel stops, you’ll need a hammer drill, a hammer, and something to wipe away dust as you install. Once you’ve decided where you’ll be installing, start drilling a guide hole. When it’s deep enough, line the wheel stop properly over the holes, and install it using the road spikes that should be supplied with the wheel stop. |
It is always a great idea to paint the speed bumps in your parking lot. This will prevent drivers from driving at full-speed through your lot. Driving over a speed bump at a fast rate of speed can hurt the vehicle. Painting the speed bump will make it more effective as a speed deterrent.
The speed bump would most likely be painted with a concrete primer. A primer with color would be better and would result in having two colors. Then they would be painted over with brightly colored stripes. It is recommended that asphalt speed bumps be repainted every year to make sure the driver sees them and slows down in response. Asphalt is a more expensive material than rubber speed bumps. |
